Geekbox
Popey’s mention of his “distro tin” on a recent UUPC episode inspired me to post the details of my “distro tin”, which I have been carring around for years in some variation or another now. I call mine my “geekbox” and was inspired to put it together ages ago after having read about “Lofty” Wiseman’s survival kit in a tin in the SAS Survival Handbook. So without further ado, here is my geekbox, having been refined in daily IT support field use over the last few years:
Outside of the tin
Opened — tight fit prevents rattling
Tin with contents removed
List of contents
- Linux Outlaws business cards
- Linux Outlaws Moo cards
- 2 GB thumb drive with bootable Linux distros
- 8 GB thumb drive for data and tools
- 2 AA batteries
- Vacuum-sealed pack of Chinese green tea
Hope this gives you useful information and inspiration for your own set of tools for your daily computer geekery needs. This kit has served me well every day for a long time now and I basically just fill up the contents when needed and buy a new tin every two years or so…
